Description

Dear Heart Health Advocate:

In 2012 – 13, under the leadership of the Hospital Association of Rhode Island (HARI) and the Rhode Island Department of Health (DOH), health care providers and advocates conducted a comprehensive statewide community health needs assessment.  Following the assessment, a prioritization process was undertaken and heart disease was identified as an area for particular focus.  More specifically, goals identified include:

  • Increase the number of women that are aware of their heart disease risk
  • Reduce heart disease through early identification, and early and appropriate treatment/management.

As you are likely aware, there is much positive work in place and underway in the Westerly area as it relates to heart health:

  • Westerly was the first town in Rhode Island to receive the DOH’s Heart Safe Community designation, indicating the community’s commitment to saving lives through prevention, early access to care, early CPR, early defibrillation, and early advanced care.
  • Westerly hosts the annual American Heart Association Heart Walk, with hundreds of participants raising thousands of dollars for the fight against heart disease and stroke.
  • Westerly AED maintains a locations list of over 80 defibrillators throughout the greater Westerly-Pawcatuck area and services many of those.
  • Westerly Hospital offers Cardiac Risk Factor Reduction prevention programs as well as Cardiac Rehabilitation programs and prevention-focused community programs.
We can still do more to engage partners to meet identified needs, however, and we would like to invite you to join the effort.  There are many examples from across the country of community programs that have made an impact on heart health and we encourage your participation in creating Heart Healthy Westerly.  Some of these efforts include programs to help residents reduce illness and death from cardiovascular disease by decreasing smoking, increasing exercise, eating more healthfully, and checking blood cholesterol levels.

Please mark your calendar for February 4, 2015 at 8 – 9:30am in the Nardone Conference Center at Westerly Hospital for a breakfast and coalition building meeting.  We will update on the heart health status of Westerly residents as well as review best practices, then deciding what Westerly would like to undertake to become more heart healthy.

Communities that join together to address public health concerns have made a big difference in many ways.  Westerly has a track-record of doing just this.  Please join us in this effort.
