Mystic Seaport to hold “TUGS!” Blast III May 21-22
A Weekend of Visiting Tugboats, Demonstrations, and Family Activities

Mystic, CT – Visiting tugboats, special activities, and toy tugboat building will highlight the third “TUGS!” Blast weekend at Mystic Seaport Saturday and Sunday, May 21-22, from 9.a.m. to 5 p.m.
An outgrowth of the Museum’s “TUGS!” exhibit, the weekend is designed as a family-friendly event with fun, tug-themed activities for all ages.
Visitors will be invited to climb aboard the CORNELL, a restored railroad tug that once shuttled barges of railcars across New York Harbor.  Other vessels include Gwenmore Marine’s GWENDOLYN, and the always popular mini-tugs TOOT TOOT, ATLANTIC HUNTER II, and SEAHORSE.  The mini-tugs will be conducting special demonstrations throughout the day.
The Museum’s tugboat pool will open for the season, giving visitors of all ages the opportunity to take the helm of a radio-controlled model and try their hand as captain.
Children are invited to story time in the Children’s Museum, featuring everyone’s favorite little tug, “Little Toot,” and they can build a wooden tugboat keepsake (nominal fee for the toy boat workshop). Additionally, visitors can take part in a variety of hands-on activities throughout the weekend including a heaving-line toss, friendly games of tug-of-war, and printing a special tugboat handbill.
The weekend is a celebration of the Museum’s “TUGS!” exhibit, an exploration of the past, present and future of the tug, tow, and barge industry. The exhibit features custom-created videos, rare images and artifacts, and a simulator where one can take the helm of a busy tugboat. “TUGS!” can be found in the R.J. Schaefer Exhibit Hall.
